FAQs

How old does my child need to be?

Our lessons cater for ages 3+ and up. We ask that parents stick around during Super Grom sessions 3 - 6 year olds.

First time skateboarder?

Complete beginners are always welcome! For anyone brand new to skating, we recommend booking a private lesson first, before jumping into a group class. It gives your child one-on-one time to nail the basics — balance, pushing, stopping — in a relaxed setting, and helps us work out exactly which group class and skill level will suit them best once they're ready to join in. Any nerves usually disappear fast once the wheels start rolling!

A skateboard, suitable footwear, and a helmet — helmets are compulsory at all times. Don't have your own gear yet? We can provide all equipment upon request!

What do I need to start?

What size skateboard should I buy?

It's important to have a board that's the right size and good quality, so your child can learn to skate safely and enjoyably — please avoid cheap boards from general stores like Kmart or The Warehouse, and check your local skate or surf shop for a proper setup instead. We recommend Bammas Surf & Leisure (43 Moir St, Mangawhai) or After Hours (thisisafterhours.co.nz), run by local Morri — a big supporter of skateboarding.

Skateboards come in a range of sizes — as a guide:

  • 7.5" wide is ideal for younger skaters (ages 4–9) or those with smaller feet

  • 7.75" wide is ideal for skaters aged 8–13

  • 8.0" wide is ideal for skaters aged 10+

What Happens if its raining?

Unfortunately we cant skate in the rain! If the lesson needs to be cancelled due to rain we will let you know at least an hour before the lesson. You can either then be refunded the full amount or use your credit for the next session.
